What You Really Need to Work as an ESL Teacher (and What No One Tells You)
Hello everyone, and welcome to Linguaera!
I'm so excited to share tips and ideas that can help you become better and more successful in the ESL industry.
Today, I’ll be talking about what you really need to become a successful ESL teacher and achieve financial stability.
1. Persistence
If you think the first school you apply to will hire you — maybe it will.
But more often than not, it won’t. Just like with any job, you have to knock on a hundred doors before one even opens, and maybe only one of them will truly let you in.
So don’t be discouraged when I say: you need to be persistent.
It’s better to knock on a thousand doors than to miss out on a thousand opportunities.
2. Just Because You Speak English Doesn’t Mean You Know How to Teach It
Knowing English is a great foundation — but it's your skills that build the house (or your career).
You have to invest time and effort every single day, learning how to actually teach.
Here’s my honest advice:
Set aside just 30 minutes a day to read, watch videos, and study how to become a better ESL teacher. It adds up. It makes a difference.
And always remember:
If someone else made it in this industry — you can too.
3. Everything You Learn Must Be Applied
Learning is power, but applying that power is its true purpose.
Whatever you know, you must put into practice. Never think that any skill is unnecessary. Everything you learn needs to be seen and heard.
So every time you master a skill, apply it whenever you get the chance. You can even practice it by yourself multiple times to really internalize it and get better.
There are many paths to becoming an ESL teacher, but only you know your true reason for wanting to do it.
If your reason is strong enough for you, it will be enough to push you through everything required to succeed.
Remember: it all begins and ends with you.
We’ve come to the end, but I hope this is just the beginning for you.
I’m really glad you took the time to read this post, and I truly hope it helps you on your journey.
See you in the next post!
Wishing you all the best in your ESL career.
